Abstract

This chapter discusses the changing leadership position of higher education to achieve diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) in campus communities. It goes beyond tradition-compliance-based models and proposes that transformative institutional change mandates leaders who are self-conscious, structurally receptive, and culturally attentive. It draws upon the current research in educational leadership, critical race theory and organizational change to discuss how inclusive leadership behaviors, including hiring pipelines that are transparent and inclusive curriculum development, can eliminate systemic exclusion and create a culture in which all students, faculty and staff feel truly belonging. It also tackles the political backlash, institutional challenges, and psychological cost that comes along with long-term DEIB work, providing useful models to help with these struggles and do so with integrity. The chapter ends with a practical model towards leaders who are determined to ensure equity is not just a value but an outcome that can be measured by the institution.
