Abstract

Where have the women been and what roles they played during the multiple armed conflicts in South Asia? Even as wars and armed conflicts impact women deeply and differently, their position, roles, thinking on war, peace and security remain are being recorded and analyzed. This essay examines women’s roles in South Asian armed conflicts and culls out how they were active in several armed conflicts from women fighters in the LTTE, women Maoists in the Maoists armed movement in Nepal and India. We examine the questions women activists raised during peace negotiations from Bangladesh to Nepal. The ongoing conversation on women in militaries and their role in promoting militarist cultures are recounted in this essay. This essay is based on the works of feminist writers who recorded the experiences of women in war and peace. Feminist debates on militarization, power, and peace form the framework of this essay.
