Abstract
The exhibition Fukusa: Japanese Gift Covers from the Chris Hall Collection (Perakanan Museum 2024) showcased an exquisite ensemble of Japanese textiles from the seventeenth century to the early twentieth century, in particular fukusa or square-shaped gift covers mostly made out of silk and replete with ornate embroidery and motifs. Fukusa hailed from Japan and were intended to conceal gifts while also conveying symbolic messages. The 75 pieces on display, curated by Louise Lui, were drawn from the acclaimed Chris Hall collection (a private collection of Asian textiles) and served as the Peranakan Museum’s first special exhibition after its reopening in 2023.
