Abstract
Lifelong learning is frequently positioned as a mechanism for economic mobility and workforce development. However, its developmental implications for adults who return to education later in life remain underexplored. This qualitative study explores how lifelong learning functions as a mechanism of empowerment among late bloomers in higher education. Guided by an interpretivist approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 adult learners who had re-entered higher education after delayed academic trajectories. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis and interpreted through Erikson’s psychosocial development theory and the Positive Youth Development (PYD) framework. From the analysis, four interrelated themes were developed: increased self-confidence, increased self-motivation, realizing self-potential, and self-discipline. Participants described higher education as a developmental space in which spiritual grounding and self-reflection reconstructed confidence; commitments and cognitive reframing sustained motivation; academic engagement enabled recognition of personal potential; and self-discipline supported persistence. Rather than representing delayed achievement, late educational participation was experienced as identity consolidation and agency formation under socioeconomic constraint. The findings extend PYD beyond its traditional youth focus and re-situate lifelong learning within adult developmental processes. By reframing late bloomers as resilient agents, this study contributes to adult education scholarship and informs widening participation policies within inclusive lifelong learning systems.
