Abstract
The category of transcultural fandom as it circulates in fan studies today indicates those fan communities that are perceived as “outside the dominant paradigm that grants certain texts and fandoms canonicity, either by geographic location or language, or both” (Pande 2018a: 6). However, this categorization does not stand up to scrutiny as today, all fandom is transcultural. This chapter tracks some of the effects of the continuing use of the term on the methodological practices of fan studies that have resulted in concerning knowledge gaps about how ostensibly separate fandom spaces are nonetheless interconnected with each other in today’s globalized mediascape. To illustrate these gaps the chapter proposes three methodological provocations, teased out via case studies to highlight the need for fan scholars to be more informed about global issues outside of their particular research interest, be aware of the weaponization of social justice language in fan communities historically seen to be politically progressive, and understand the influence of rising majoritarianism across fandom spaces.
