Abstract

Posttraumatic growth refers to positive psychological changes that can occur in individuals following the experience of trauma. While trauma can have significant adverse effects, it can also lead to personal growth, resilience, and positive transformations. The phenomenon of posttraumatic growth has not been explored in LGBTQ individuals in the Indian context. The present research explores the experiences of posttraumatic growth among LGBTQ individuals who were the victims of different traumas. The growth experiences of 15 participants, aged 20–27years, were explored through a semi-structured interview. Interpretative phenomenology analysis revealed three superordinate themes: trauma experiences, including bullying, sexual assaults, and exclusion; the processing of trauma, including social support and disclosure, existential questions, and remuneration; and outcomes of trauma, including the co-existence of positive and negative changes, changed priorities, the renewed purpose of life, changes in identity and resilience. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of their experiences, resilience, and well-being. This knowledge can guide the development of targeted interventions, policies, and support systems that promote tier mental health, social inclusion, and overall thriving.
