This review discusses The Backstage of Democracy by Amogh Dhar Sharma, a compelling account of the rise and influence of political consulting firms in India. Tracing the roots of political professionalisation to the 1980s, Sharma examines how data-driven, consultant-led campaigning has reshaped electoral politics. The book explores both the demand and supply sides of this phenomenon and offers critical insights into its implications for democratic norms, party ideology, and political participation. While applauding Sharma’s rich ethnographic work, the review also raises concerns about consultants' roles in promoting populism, ethical breaches, and the narrowing of politics to mere electoral performance.
