Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) consists of a set of technologies that have demonstrated tremendous potential for societal betterment. We take stock of the current adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the pharmaceutical sector. We compare AI adoption in the generic and branded sub-sectors of drug industries. We find that the branded drug players have been frontrunners in the adoption of AI technology, whilst the generic drug manufacturers are the laggards in AI adoption. In this article, we take stock of several avenues of AI adoption that correspond to the nature of the pharmaceutical industry and its sub-sectors. We utilize the grey literature in this paper using the benchmark of diffusion of innovation theory to unravel the adoption of AI in different sub-sectors of the pharma industry.
