Abstract

This study attempts to provide a comprehensive review of the contemporary landscape of dark tourism using the Theory-Context-Characteristics-Methodology (TCCM) framework. The review highlights the significance of theoretical perspectives such as self-categorization theory, socio-cognitive theory, and terror management theory in understanding the psychological and sociological aspects of dark tourism. Four major themes emerge from the analysis: war memorials and battle-related dark tourism, experiential dark tourism, natural disaster-related dark tourism, and dark exhibitions. The study proposes future research directions within each theme, while emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary collaborations.
