Abstract

Bhakti is one of the great ideological shifts that have transformed Hinduism across sectarian boundaries throughout its millennia-long evolution. It consists of establishing and nurturing a deep attachment to a chosen personal deity, thus channeling human emotions into a path to salvation. As Hindu anthropology associates emotions with women, this new perspective has led to a reevaluation of femininity in expressions of religiosity, in particular poetry and music. Feminine emotions have been emulated and articulated by male poets, while, for the first time, a few female poets rose to prominence due to their embodiment of the idea of bhakti both in their creations and in the legends surrounding their lives.
