Abstract

The Assad dynasty's 50-year rule in Syria has ended, with Bashar al-Assad exiled in Moscow. Syria, historically contested by various powers, is now at a critical juncture. Its diverse communities face existential challenges as new powers vie for control. Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa, also known as al-Jolani, a former Al-Qaida operative, has emerged as the new power broker. The collapse of Assad's regime was driven by internal weaknesses and external geopolitical ambitions, with significant involvement from Israel and the US. The US and Israel had vested interests in Assad's fall due to Syria's historical animosity towards Israel and its support for Palestine. The US had long targeted Syria for regime change, with efforts intensifying during the Arab Spring. Meanwhile, Türkiye is concerned about Kurdish autonomy in Syria, given its own Kurdish population. Assad's regime was supported by Iran and Russia, both of whom have now withdrawn their support. The new Syrian leader Jolani faces immense challenges, including economic sanctions and regional instability. As the situation evolves, Syria's diverse communities remain resilient amidst ongoing geopolitical struggles
