Abstract
Global South has chiefly felt the brunt of the great power politics from colonisation to being caught between the world powers’ power struggle since the Cold War period. Such situations have always posed dilemmas and challenges to the Global South countries in approaching their policy goals and values. This proposed chapter will consider the ties of China (People’s Republic of China) and Taiwan (Republic of China), commonly characterised as cross-strait relations. The chapter argues that the impact of a cross-strait conflict on the Global South is manifold. First, it involves major foreign powers vying to shape the policies of those countries. It forces the countries to choose between democratic values and economic development. This debate has led some countries to prioritise their ties with China over Taiwan. Second, it paves the way for supply chain disruption, particularly in critical sectors such as semiconductors, in the event of a conflict between China and Taiwan. With Taiwan being a leader in the niche technology of semiconductors, a conflict can have a catastrophic effect on the world economy, especially the Global South, where digitisation has led to a boom in the use of electronic products. A cross-strait conflict would further push it into a more profound crisis. The chapter used open-source data from official trade data between government platforms to analyse these questions. By doing a comparative analysis of the trade data, the chapter concludes that the promises by a significant country towards an economically weaker country are not always fulfilled.
