Abstract
Over time, the doctor-patient relationship has also become commercialized. In a landmark judgement in the VP Shanta case in 1995, the Supreme Court recognised patients as consumers under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. As a result, doctors and hospitals became accountable under consumer law. Under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, a patient has been treated as a consumer and has been given many rights.
