More than 20 percent of the total cases filed by consumers in the National Commission are related to houses and property. The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act 2016 (RERA) was enacted to protect consumers from fraud by builders and property dealers and to save them from long legal battles in civil courts. Tribunals and RERA authorities have been constituted under the RERA Act in most states to redress complaints and protect the rights of consumers.
