In a recent judgment, a seven-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court held that states have the right to sub-classify Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) notified in the Presidential List to provide preferential treatment to less advanced communities in public employment and education. The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, in a 6:1 majority, held that the SC category under Article 341 was not a homogeneous group as castes within the group
