Abstract
Our decision to use this Editorial to empirically study the legal scholarly publishing landscape on South AsiaFootnote1 is represented by two set of needs felt by our editorial board in the last one year. Since the last year, the editorial board has rather very liberally revised the aims and scope of Jindal Global Law Review (JGLR), and now we accept submissions on a rolling basis on all areas of legal scholarship as long as they are focused on India, South Asia, and the ‘Global South’.Footnote2 For our new readers, until our Volume 14, Issue 2, published in December 2023, we were publishing only thematic special issues focused primarily on critical legal scholarship that represented the life and experiences of law and its subjects in India, South Asia, and the ‘Global South’.Footnote3 So, the first reason that motivated us to write on this subject was driven by JGLR’s consistent commitment to publish credible legal scholarship on India, South Asia, and the ‘Global South’—this editorial being our way to reiterate and underscore that goal—through a process of evaluating the standards set by JGLR’s past publications. The other reason comes from a much deeper malaise that inflicts the global scholarly publishing landscape—the disproportionately low share of global publication output representing the socio-legal systems of South Asia.Footnote4 It is this second reason that is, in fact, in our view, the raison d’etre that drives JGLR—to do our bit at offsetting the imbalance in global knowledge production by encouraging scholars to write and publish on South Asia and the ‘Global South’ in general.
