Abstract

Plant diseases affect the product’s efficacy. Using chemical pesticides in the agricultural field has adversely affected their fertility and is also a significant threat to the ecosystem. It has also disturbed the life cycle of the ecosystem. Reducing reliance on chemical pesticides is a crucial challenge for sustainable agricultural production. One of the most critical aspects of sustainable pest control is microbial biocontrol agents. Several antagonistic microorganisms are known to reduce plant diseases. Biocontrol is the deliberate use of native or introduced living organisms, aside from disease-resistant host plants, to reduce the activity or population of plant pathogens. Utilizing beneficial microorganisms, their genes, and their byproducts, such as metabolites, to lessen the harmful impacts of plant diseases and encourage favorable responses in the plant is known as biological control. Biocontrol agents are formulated to protect the agent from hazardous environmental elements, stabilizing microbes during large-scale preparation, transportation, and storage, facilitating the product’s management and application. Understanding typical application techniques, tools, and client preferences is necessary for developing a commercially viable formulation. The present chapter focuses on the formulation of biocontrol agents (fungal and bacterial), the production, commercialization, and stabilization of biocontrol agents, and the regulation of controlling agents.
