Abstract

Nestled amidst the majestic Himalayan peaks, the region of Kashmir has long been celebrated for its landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and exquisite craftsmanship. Among the treasures that have emerged from the valley is the art of papier mâché, a delicate and intricate craft that weaves together history, culture, and artistic prowess. The craft of papier mâché was introduced to Kashmir in the 15th century by Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin, imbuing the region with a unique artistic tradition. Over the years, it transformed from a utilitarian craft serving diwans and nobles into an emblem of luxury, culture, and identity. Today, each papier mâché piece continues to narrate the story of Kashmir’s cultural legacy, its traditions, and artistic expressions. The connection of this craft to culture piqued the curiosity of Dr. Rekha and Dr. Meera. In a dialogue with Ishfaq and the team at the Centre for New Economics Studies—known for its specific research focus on Indian crafts—they expressed a keen interest in employing visual methods to delve into the world of papier mâché, examining it through the lens of feminist ethnography
