Abstract

“Kutch, as a region, is dominated by men, and it doesn’t give much agency to women, even though there’s a lot of women-led craft. We extensively travelled between two villages, yet we never saw a woman on the road. Women were never present in workshops. Once, an owner took us to a school inside the village to show us a family tree dominated by men, all related and at the helm of the craft. This was a strange experience for me as a female ethnographer on a journey to explore social hierarchies and gender roles within the craft of Ajrakh.”
