Abstract
Joshimath, one of the historic towns in the foothills of the Himalayas in the State of Uttarakhand, is sinking with severe land subsidence. The area has been declared disaster-prone, and the families living there are being relocated. The experts point to the rampant infrastructure development in the region, which has intensified the vulnerability of the tenuous ecosystem to the lethal effects of climate change, as the reason for this catastrophe. The unfolding disaster of Joshimath is a reminder of the menaces of increased disasters/hazards triggered by climate change. India is a case in point as a nation threatened by climate change. Despite having one of the lowest per-capita emissions rates, India is among the most vulnerable nations affected by climate change and resultant disasters. For the purposes of this paper, climate-induced disasters refer to the increased frequency and magnitude of extreme weather events like floods, cyclones, droughts, heatwaves etc, brought about by climate change. The Ministry of Earth Sciences report titled 'Assessment of Climate Change over the Indian Region' has forecasted an increased frequency of disasters for the country.
