Abstract
The Slovak Constitutional Court (‘SCC’) is a rule-adjudicating political institution (Rothstein 133–34) that has several exclusive competences reserved to centralized constitutional courts (Cappelletti 53–66), such as constitutional review of legislation and authoritative interpretation of the Constitution of the Slovak Republic (Constitution of the Slovak Republic: September 1, 1992 (as Amended to 2020) (Slovk)). Its constitutionally entrenched role is to be a guardian of constitutionality and hence of the democratic regime in the country which became independent after the break-up of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic on 1 January 1993. This entry reviews the main features of the SCC in a historical and doctrinal perspective and illustrates the institution’s performance in fulfilling its core mission between 1993 and 2023
