Abstract
Women belonging to India’s minority communities follow and observe better menstrual health and hygiene compared to their counterparts in the majority community, an analysis based on the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) data and insights reveals. For our study, we relied on a largely representative sample of 241,112 women in the 15-24 age group from NFHS-5 conducted in 2019-2021 and focused on questions related to menstruation for the analysis. Slicing the sub-samples by religion based on other socio-demographic characteristics of women and their households, the study was found that the average increase in the usage of period products could be masking several interesting heterogeneous patterns in relation to the menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) index.
