Abstract

India is the world’s largest democracy, a hallmark of which, is its ability to conduct free, and fair elections, despite the plurality and deep-seated ideological differences of its polity. At the helm of this electoral governance framework is the Election Commission of India (ECI). The ECI is endowed with a high degree of autonomy and authority and bestowed with the responsibility of conducting not only the elections for the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, but also that for the offices of the President, Vice-President as also the State legislatures. One of the salient tools available to the ECI in the conduct of free and fair elections is the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
