Abstract

The small island nations of the South Pacific region are some of the most aid dependent countries in the world. This study has conceptualised "climate change trap" as a major factor that keeps these island nations perpetually aid dependent and will not become aid independent regardless of how fast they grow economically. Every year, these island nations get affected by climatic disasters, which leave massive destructions behind. The meagre economies cannot afford to finance all the recovery and reconstruction projects without foreign aid. Thus, these nations are forced to seek international financial and technical assistance.
In addition, it is now undeniably obvious that climate change has global impact and affects every nation in one way or another. However, in the case of the Pacific region in general and Fiji and Vanuatu in particular, climate change is an existential threat to them.
