Abstract

The rapid technological advancement has reduced the world to a global village. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU, 2022) reported that approximately 70% of the global population access the internet of which 75% of the youth are in the age group of 15 to 24 years, and 73% youth are in the Asia Pacific region. In India, there are around 658 million active internet users who primarily engage in entertainment, communication and social media (ICUBE, 2021; Statista, February 2022). While the internet is considered as a safe environment, a large number of cyber-attacks occur on daily basis. Irrespective of age, all internet users are equally exposed to attacks. Children known as digital natives are surrounded with digital devices and often are unaware of imposters, thus, making them susceptible to cyber-attacks. Knowledge of various risks such as being exposed to harmful or inappropriate and objectionable content including sexual, violent or pornographic images; websites propagating selfharm, anorexia or suicide will aid in safeguarding children. Learning the existing vulnerabilities and adopting appropriate measures and practices can protect children from perpetrators of cyber crimes. Along with children, ensuring that the teachers and parents with whom children interact regularly and school authorities are kept abreast of cyber safety and security. The level of awareness, knowledge and importance of cyber safety and security is not constant and uniform among children, parents, teachers and school authorities. It varies due to (i) socio-demographics, (ii) geographic region, (iii) government guidelines set for parents and schools and (iv) online exposure of internet.
