Abstract
The Statute of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea makes provision for the appointment of judges ad hoc. Out of the 29 cases submitted to the Tribunal to date, 22 judges ad hoc were appointed in 15 cases. This article provides an overview of the practice of the Tribunal with respect to the institution of judge ad hoc.
