Abstract
Anupam Mishra (1948–2016) is a prominent revivor of the Indian traditional water-harvesting systems. Mishra argues that since the dawn of Indian civilization till the time of British Colonial rule, water harvesting systems were an inherent characteristic of the Indian culture; hence he named it a “water culture.” Architecture is posited as a cardinal element of the water culture. This chapter analyzes the varied ways by which water and architecture sanctify each other as postulated in Mishra's study of water culture, in four parts. The first describes the essential architectural features of the water bodies. The second focuses on the multilayered functions of decorative elements. The third studies the status of the gazdhars (water architects), perceived as a reflection of the resilience and morality of the society. The fourth presents the baori or stepwell, exemplifying the peak of the architectural knowledge, skills, and craftsmanship of the gazdhars. I argue that Mishra's significance lies in presenting a unique Indian example, expanding the scope of discussion far beyond that of a “professional” debate on architecture. Architecture is viewed as the medium that reflects the sacred stewardship between humans, water, and the divine. A reciprocal-interconnected phenomenon results in ecological resilience and social cohesion.
