Abstract
Last year, the Muteshekau Shipu (Magpie River) in Quebec, Canada, long cherished by the Innu First Nations, was granted legal personhood.Footnote1 This case is part of a now growing trend of cases around the world,Footnote2 where indigenous populations are using various strategiesFootnote3 to protect their ancestral lands and rivers as well as preserve their cultural connections with nature. The intent of these cases, much of which stems from indigenous ideas that challenge notions of nature as inert and reimagine existing categories of legal personhood, lies at the heart of Amitav Ghosh’s book—The Nutmeg’s Curse: Parables for a Planet in Crisis
