Abstract

This is the second in a series of eight articles on the International Criminal Court. The Rome Statute creating the ICC entered into force on July 1, 2002 and the court is now in its 20th year. To mark the occasion, The Wire is publishing a series of articles evaluating its performance over the past two decades. The Wire is a renowned and credible online newspaper/magazine that is non-profit and independent. This second article is on the struggle for justice and accountability for crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide allegedly committed by nationals of powerful countries, and the attempt of their governments to shield their own nationals from accountability processes of the ICC. It argues that the exercise of universal jurisdiction by other countries can complement the work of the ICC in holding such nationals accountable for the most serious crimes under international law that they are alleged to have committed.
