Abstract
In 2019, civil strife and political unrest stemmed from the government’s ratification of the ‘Citizenship Amendment Act’ (“The 2019 Act”) which afforded citizenship to a select few religious minorities in Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, who as per the ruling party had historically faced “religious persecution” in their home countries. The Act granted citizenship to almost all religious denominations, with the exception of those belonging to the Muslim community.[1]
