Abstract
n enquiry into the fundamental causes of social inequalities has fascinated public health researchers and policymakers around the world. The questions as to why gender-, class-, race-, and caste-based differences in health outcomes have been approached from various theoretical points of view—they have ranged from the structural to the cultural/behavioural explanations to the tendency to treat inequalities in health as an artefact. The framework put forward by the Commission on Social Determinants of Health (SDH) by the World Health Organization tries to synthesise some of these perspectives into a comprehensive framework.
