Abstract
Nirupama Rao, The Fractured Himalaya, India Tibet China 1949–1962 (Penguin, India, 2021), pp. xxvii + 609, `999, ISBN 9780670088294. The past is with us, especially in India’s relations with China. It is this past that Rao’s scholarship illuminates for the reader in her diligently researched book, The Fractured Himalaya. It covers the critical period of India-China relations from 1949 to 1962. Rao begins with events in the early 20th century that created the constantly contested border between the two states but then moves the spotlight on independent India’s policy decisions that have determined our relations with Beijing up to the present.
