Abstract
Reading: an application of the ocular to the orthographic, and onwards to intellection. But assuming some neutral plane of intellection obscures the extreme multifariousness of literary reading and the individuated character of responses to texts. This can be matter pf physically. Teaching literature depends upon this variety while simultaneously narrowing it through the inculcation of coherent reading for coherent writing.
