Abstract
The Constitution of India by way of an amendment in 1976, created provisions for the
protection and improvement of environment. Thus, “[T]he State shall endeavor to protect
and improve the environment and to safeguard the forests and wild life of the country.”
Also, it became a fundamental duty of citizens “to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wild life, and to have compassion for living creatures.
