Abstract

Over the years, the strain on the domestic healthcare facilities has been increasing. This has led to higher costs, lower levels of accessibility, and a deteriorating quality of services in the domestic framework. Consequently, the trend of ‘medical tourism’ has emerged; in which, people travel beyond the boundaries of their country in search of medical services at a low cost. India has proved to be an attractive destination for medical tourists because it offers good quality services, comparable to that of first world countries, but at low costs. Additionally, traditional methods of treatment such as Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) give the Indian industry its distinctive spin. The tourism industry is overseen by the Ministry of Tourism; however, largely run by the private sector. The healthcare professionals are all highly skilled, and the infrastructure is top-notch. The private hospitals are equipped with the latest technology that provides the best treatment. Many of the hospitals have obtained accreditation from JCI and/or NABH, which acts as a guarantee of their quality of services. The Government has taken several steps such as setting up of the National Medical and Wellness Tourism Board and the Healthcare Portal, advertising at international platforms, providing for a specialized visa, engaging in Public-Private Partnerships with supporting sectors, providing fiscal support through the Medical Development Assistance Scheme, and so on.
