Abstract
Throughout the world there are a number of armed conflicts which may involve multiple countries across international borders or a single country. During such warfare, troops sometimes engage in genocide, war rape and ethnic cleansing. However, very often the criminals are not punished for their actions. As an attempt to end the culture of impunity, establish the rule of law, halt the abuses during armed conflicts, a system of transitional justice has been introduced to assist countries in transition to achieve justice and democracy. During armed conflict or warfare, women, because of their vul nerability, are often victims of gender-based violence. Unfortunately during the transitional justice processes, many of these female victims are often the forgotten victim The purpose of this chapter is to critically examine the transitional justice initiatives address the plight of female victims. It makes recommendations on how to improve the gender sensitivity of different tran sitional justice mechanisms.
