Abstract
Economic well-being of a household in an agrarian economy is crucially linked to ownership of assets. Assets can not only be de ployed in household enterprises, they can be used as collateral, sold in the markets and can be rented out. In an agrarian economy, for example, it is common to find rental markets for land and machin ery. Furthermore, ownership of assets, most importantly of land, is an important determinant of the location of a household in the system of agrarian relations. Whether workers in a household sell their labour power or deploy it in their own household enterprise depends crucially on the extent to which they own various means of production.
