Abstract
The administrative structure of most international organisations includes a secretariat that plays an important role in the functioning of the entire regime. Secretariats act as the backbone of the organisations and mainly perform administrative functions. Secretariats originated with the League of Nations1 and continued with the United Nations (UN) Secretariat, which has provided administrative support since 1945.2 Various secretariats
may perform common or specific functions depending on the aims of the treaty.
