In the words of Mahatma Gandhi for Prison reforms, “Crime is the outcome of a diseased mind and jail must have an environment of hospital for treatment and care.” The Indian prison system has received considerable government attention because of its infamous cruel and inhumane conditions in recent years. The objective of this paper is to study the prison reforms in India by tracing it`s development prior-independence and post-independence in brief. Through this paper, we will examine how the prison reforms are still stagnant as inmates are still systematically denied their fundamental rights. The Conditions of the Indian prisons will be analysed through a detailed analysis of Tihar jail in New Delhi. We will also focus on various rights guaranteed to the prisoners by the Indian Constitution and examine various cases. Lastly, this paper will also emphasise on international criminal justice system and their implication of prison reforms through a development lens.
