Abstract
Food production forms a vital international necessity; this, however, subjects the natural ecosystems to a lot of strain, thus being one of the causes of a continuum of environmental problems. The main effects include deforestation and loss of habitats caused by agricultural growth, and this leads to a decline in biodiversity and disruption in the ecosystem. The agrarian activities are further intensified and therefore worsen the environmental conditions by overusing fertilizers, pesticides, and weedicides which are contaminants that leech into the water system and threaten aquatic life. Furthermore, livestock production is also one of the major sources of greenhouse gases, which consequently increases the pace of climate change. To overcome these issues, it means a shift towards responsible and climate-conscious practices. Methods like crop rotation, organic farming, improved management of waste materials, and introduction of diversified systems of crop production are some of the strategies that can be used to alleviate the health of the soil, resource conservation, and losses related to pests. Besides, consumer-led efforts such as meat reduction and the choice to consume foods that are produced locally are central in reducing environmental footprints. This chapter examines these interconnected issues and reviews effective and science-based interventions to reduce the effects of the environment on food production systems with an aim of informing policymakers, industry players, and consumers to adopt more sustainable and resilient food systems.
