Abstract

This chapter examines how agentic artificial intelligence can function as an empathy scaffold to support emotionally intelligent and relationally grounded leadership in digitally mediated organizations. Drawing on emotional intelligence theory, empathetic leadership research, and sociocognitive models of scaffolding, it explains how AI-enabled tools—such as real-time emotional feedback, conversational coaching, and adaptive learning systems—can enhance leaders' emotional awareness, reflective capacity, and ethical judgment. Organizational applications, including Microsoft Viva, Workday Peakon, BetterUp, and Zoom IQ, illustrate how agentic AI is being used to surface emotional patterns and support leadership development in practice. At the same time, the chapter critically examines concerns related to authenticity, cultural interpretation, algorithmic bias, privacy, and the risk of emotional surveillance. It concludes by proposing principles for the ethical and transparent design of AI systems that augment human empathy and judgment rather than attempting to replace them.
