Abstract

The current collective human consumption is estimated to have surpassed the earth’s natural production capacity and the unsustainable consumption practices have devastating consequences on the earth’s capacity to support its life forms. Moreover, mobilizing individuals’ self-interest is thought to be the surest way to a more sustainable future, and scholars advocate a consumer-centric sustainability approach urging individuals to restructure their consumption behaviour. In the wake of the pressing need for restructuring consumption behaviour, scholars have urged exploring the potential role of mindfulness in individuals’ awareness of their self-consumption practices and in restructuring their consumption behaviours. Furthermore, in a recent review of 1137 publications, only seven empirical studies could be traced having tried exploring the role of mindfulness in sustainable consumption behaviour. In this vein, scholars call for and reiterate the importance of systematic, comprehensive and interdisciplinary empirical research trying to explicate the role of individuals’ mindfulness in restructuring consumption behaviours.
