Abstract
The author grew up in the Indian subcontinent around animal and God tales. In her school library and many years later in Jungian literature, she discovered the breadth and depth of fairy tales, initiating a journey between worlds. When she was twenty-seven, she lost her beloved father. At the same time she synchronistically encountered an Indian fairy tale about a princess who loves her own father like salt. The princess has to go on a long journey to prove her love. In her own journey, elements of this tale catapulted her into a personal inquiry. She explores the meaning and archetypal content of the Salt tale from the perspective of an Indian woman. This article reflects her inner journey as she wrestled to come to terms with life without her father and beyond traditional female roles in the Indian subcontinent. Embedded in this analysis of feminine individuation are themes of marriage, exile, death, and being reborn with a new inner and outer attitude.

| Additional Information: | I would sincerely like to thank Robin Eve Greenberg, an associate editor of Jung Journal: Culture & Psyche, for closely working with me on developing my paper and bringing it to its present form. Her careful engagement with my ideas and patient deliberation over the text and the symbols gave me the ground for exploring my own ideas more deeply. Her insights have been truly valuable. |
