Abstract

This chapter explores the challenges faced by gig workers in forming unions and engaging in collective bargaining within the rapidly evolving gig economy. It examines legal and regulatory barriers, employer resistance, and the unique characteristics of gig work that complicate traditional organizing efforts. Furthermore, the chapter discusses the potential of technological innovations, government reforms, and alternative models of worker representation, such as platform cooperatives, to enhance collective bargaining capabilities. As societal attitudes toward labor rights shift, the chapter underscores the importance of empowering gig workers through collaborative approaches and global solidarity. Ultimately, it argues for the necessity of reimagining collective bargaining frameworks to ensure fair labor practices and improved working conditions in the gig economy.
