Abstract
This entry on gender and nonviolence is relevant to the larger discussion on gender and politics, because it gives insights into the role and position of gender in existing structures of power characterized by gender inequities and injustices. The entry discusses the following questions related to meaningful representation in politics and decision making: Does gender play a role in combatting violence in democratic and nondemocratic countries? How do representative democracies address politics of exclusion that operate on the social, cultural, and religious construction of gender? From the prism of the global feminist movement, this entry engages with the relationship between gender and nonviolence in diverse political and social settings. It primarily focuses on conflict and the processes of peace building in socially fragmented societies, as well as feminist activism aimed toward eliminating structural inequities that constrain the lives and choices of women and other gender minorities. Their experiences in violent and nonviolent movements tend to compound with intersectionalities of race, caste, ethnicity, class, and religion in different political contexts.
