Abstract

This chapter outlines the means by which Australian state and territorial governments provide financial support to nongovernment or private religious schools, for primary and tertiary education, and the implications that has for both separation of church and state and the protection of religious free exercise. 1 In Australia, a constitutional federal democracy, religion and education are governed through a careful balance of federal, or Commonwealth, and state and territory or regional law and policy.
