Abstract

Planetary Defense is a mechanism to monitor and protect Earth from any outer space threats. This defense includes any threat from comets, asteroids, or space objects. The paper claims that planetary defense is an erga omnes obligation. It is the responsibility of all states to protect Earth from any threat from outer space. The paper uses movie rhetoric and analysis of the existing literature as a methodology to prove the claim. The article uses Hollywood movies Deep Impact and Armageddon to establish a claim of erga omnes obligation. Based on existing international law, the article argues that the planetary defense mechanism is a subject of cooperation. This principle of cooperation is one of the essential principles of the Outer Space Treaty 1967 and general international law. ep Rai Moreover, planetary defense is a part of the precautionary principle of international law. The United Nations Charter provides a system of collective security and self-defense in case of any threat. This paper says that collective security and defense include any threat, including from outer space. Therefore, it is part of contemporary international law, and the principle's scope is broad enough for the states to consider it an erga omnes obligation to protect our earth.
