Abstract
Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) – clean water and sanitation envisage, among other things, the attainment of the following by 2030: namely, securing universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water to all; increasing water-use efficiency, ensuring sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater and substantially reducing the number of people suffering from water scarcity; implementing integrated water resources management; improving water quality by reducing pollution; and eliminating dumping and minimizing the release of hazardous chemicals and materials. All the SDGs and their targets are intertwined and mutually reinforcing. Moreover, because of water’s life-sustaining and encompassing quality, all the SDGs are directly or indirectly related to water. Water thus becomes “a transversal element” in the SDGs (SPANCOLD 2019). This perspective requires adopting an integrated conceptual framework linking water to the larger sustainable development agenda where the SDGs’ realization depends considerably on how successful countries are in attaining SDG 6.
