Abstract
Revolution Within: Nampudiri Women as Agents of Social Reform in Kerala by T K Anandi undertakes the important task of studying the period of social reform in the early 19th century, foregrounding the women’s question within the historical and material conditions of its making. Anandi does this by situating the social position of the Antharjanam (Nampudiri women) in medieval Kerala and examining their role as agents of change and social reform within the Nampudiri Brahmin community. Methodologically, the book addresses a critical gap in existing literature on women’s responses to social reform in Kerala by interweaving oral histories, detailed interviews, and participant observation, complemented with a rich study of secondary sources. In doing so, Anandi shifts the narrative from viewing women merely as subjects of reform to repositioning them as its agents.
