This paper provides the first quantitative history of fifty years of scholarship on spirituality, charting the evolving landscape of the field by analyzing a corpus of 43,293 academic documents published between 1975 and 2025. The results reveal a distinct thematic hierarchy, with “Psychology & Mental Health” emerging as the most dominant theme (23.6% of the corpus), followed by “Religion, Theology & Philosophy” ;(16.6%) and “Healthcare & Medicine”;(13.3%). This hierarchy documents a clear paradigm shift – a “psychologization” of spirituality – where the field’s center of gravity has moved from its humanistic foundations toward an applied, social-scientific framework in which spirituality is primarily valued for its utility in promoting well-being and mental health. By empirically mapping this half-century of scholarship, this study offers a new macro-level perspective that provides the field of spirituality studies with a data-driven understanding of its own history and a foundation for charting its future.
